Interior Design – Contemporary Penthouse in Historical Building

This two-bedroom penthouse in Cumbria has been fully redesigned to create a calm, practical and well-balanced living space. The brief focused on comfort, clean lines and thoughtful details throughout — with a palette and furnishings that feel warm, modern and considered.

Entrance & Hallway

The entrance sets a relaxed tone with oak-effect flooring, soft neutral walls, and a small reading area. Two velvet shell chairs, a trunk-style side table, and a large map artwork create a quiet corner, while a gallery of framed prints adds interest without overcrowding the space.

Living Room

In the main lounge, natural light from two large windows brightens the space. The layout is simple and functional, with two grey sofas, layered cushions in ochre and navy, and a textured rug adding softness. A green marble-effect coffee table brings in a subtle focal point, while minimal artwork keeps the room feeling open and uncluttered. Lighting is recessed, using ceiling-mounted spotlights throughout.

Kitchen & Dining

The kitchen features handleless cabinets in a light matte finish, with WiFi-enabled Siemens appliances integrated throughout. Worktops are pale and clean-lined, with a mirrored splashback to help bounce light across the room. A circular dining table sits on a soft rug with four modern chairs — a compact but welcoming space for everyday use.

Bedroom

The main bedroom uses soft greys and off-whites to create a calm atmosphere. The upholstered headboard, layered bedding, and matching bedside tables bring in comfort, while the moody seascape artwork adds depth without dominating the room. Simple window dressings let the natural light in while maintaining privacy.

Bathroom

The bathroom uses large marble-effect tiles across the walls, paired with a walk-in rainfall shower and modern black fittings. A round, backlit mirror above the sink adds a soft glow, and a teak mat on the floor brings in a bit of warmth and texture. Storage is built-in, keeping the space clean and practical.

Summary

This redesign focuses on subtle detail and usability, with a neutral palette, considered furnishings, and integrated smart features. The result is a space that feels comfortable, contemporary and easy to live in.
